Hurricane Maria and Climate Change in Puerto Rico

The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has experienced devastating hurricanes in the last years, especially due to rising global temperatures (IPCC, 2014). Indeed warmer waters are providing energy for more intense hurricanes to hit the island. In 2017, Puerto Rico had two severe storms, only two weeks apart from each other: Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Mary.

The heavy rains of Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. It is still possible to see the damage caused by it and with the latest blizzard on May 22, 2021, further damage will have to be faced.
